Priced for 1 TB, 1,000,000 objects and the requests and retrieval above, in us-east-1. The Intelligent-Tiering row uses the tier split you entered. The classes are not interchangeable: they differ in minimum storage duration, minimum billable object size and how fast data comes back. Glacier Flexible Retrieval and Deep Archive objects must be restored before they can be read. The table of those rules is below.

How AWS S3 storage pricing works

The calculator covers four parts of an S3 bill. Storage: the average amount of data stored over the month, per GB-month, at the rate of its storage class. AWS counts a GB as 1,073,741,824 bytes. S3 Standard has volume tiers: in US East (N. Virginia) it costs $0.023 per GB for the first 50 TB a month, $0.022 for the next 450 TB and $0.021 over 500 TB. Requests: per 1,000, with one rate for PUT, COPY, POST and LIST and another for GET, SELECT and everything else. DELETE and CANCEL are free. Retrieval: Standard-IA, One Zone-IA and Glacier Instant Retrieval charge per GB read back. Glacier Flexible Retrieval and Deep Archive objects must be restored before they can be read, and a restore is charged per GB and per request, except a Bulk restore from Glacier Flexible Retrieval, which is free. Monitoring: Intelligent-Tiering adds $0.0025 per 1,000 objects a month.

Two per-object rules can matter more than the rate. Standard-IA, One Zone-IA and Glacier Instant Retrieval bill an object smaller than 128 KB as 128 KB. Glacier Flexible Retrieval and Deep Archive add 40 KB of metadata to every object: 8 KB at the S3 Standard rate and 32 KB at the archive rate. The calculator applies both from the object count you enter. For the 128 KB minimum it bills at least objects × 128 KB, which is exact when every object is small and a lower bound when only some are.

The classes also have minimum storage durations: 30 days for Standard-IA and One Zone-IA, 90 days for Glacier Instant Retrieval and Glacier Flexible Retrieval, and 180 days for Deep Archive. Delete, overwrite or transition an object sooner and you pay for the rest of that period. The calculator prices data that stays for the month, so it does not add these charges.

What the calculator leaves out: data transfer out of AWS; replication; S3 Storage Lens advanced metrics; S3 Batch Operations; AWS KMS requests when objects use SSE-KMS; the extra copies versioning keeps, each billed as a full object; lifecycle transition requests; early-deletion charges; the temporary copy a Glacier restore creates, which is billed at the S3 Standard rate; the Expedited and Bulk retrieval tiers; the optional Intelligent-Tiering archive tiers; S3 Express One Zone; free tier credits; and tax. For Glacier restores it uses the Standard retrieval tier and estimates the number of restore requests from your average object size. It charges the Intelligent-Tiering monitoring fee on every object you enter, although objects under 128 KB are not monitored or charged.

Which storage class for which access pattern

A class is cheaper to store in when it expects fewer reads, and it makes up the difference with retrieval fees, higher request prices, minimum durations and slower access. Pick by how often the data is read and how long it stays. The comparison table in the calculator prices your own data in every class; this table lists the rules it does not price.

From the Amazon S3 user guide. One Zone-IA keeps data in one Availability Zone and is not resilient to the loss of that zone; AWS recommends it for data you can re-create.

Worked example: 20 TB of backups

20 TB of backups in 2,000,000 objects (about 10.49 MB each), 100,000 PUT and 50,000 GET requests a month, and 200 GB read back or restored a month, in US East (N. Virginia).

S3 Standard: 20,480 GB × $0.023 = $471.04, plus $0.52 requests = $471.56 a month
Standard-IA: 20,480 GB × $0.0125 = $256.00; requests $1.05; retrieval 200 GB × $0.01 = $2.00; total $259.05
Deep Archive: (20,480 + 61.04 GB metadata) × $0.00099 + 15.26 GB × $0.023 = $20.69; requests $5.02; retrieval 200 GB × $0.02 + 19,531 restore requests × $0.10 per 1,000 = $5.95; total $31.66

Every class for the same backups, with the Intelligent-Tiering row assuming 20% of the data in Infrequent Access and 70% in Archive Instant Access:

20 TB of backups in each storage class, US East (N. Virginia)

S3 Glacier Deep Archive$20.69$5.02$5.95$0.00$31.66$379.92

Deep Archive is the cheapest here because the backups are rarely read. A Standard-tier restore typically finishes within 12 hours, and data deleted before 180 days is billed for the full 180.

Ways to lower an S3 bill

  • Move data with lifecycle rules as it ages. A rule can transition objects to a cheaper class after a number of days. Each object moved is one transition request: moving 1,000,000 objects costs $10.00 into Standard-IA, $30.00 into Glacier Flexible Retrieval and $50.00 into Deep Archive in US East (N. Virginia). Objects smaller than 128 KB are not transitioned by default, because the request can cost more than the saving.
  • Expire what you no longer need. A lifecycle expiration action deletes objects at the end of their lifetime, and AWS does not charge for the expiration or for storage after it.
  • Clean up old versions. With versioning on, every version is stored and billed as a whole object. A NoncurrentVersionExpiration rule deletes old versions after a set number of days.
  • Abort incomplete multipart uploads. The parts of an upload that never finished stay in the bucket and count toward its stored bytes. An AbortIncompleteMultipartUpload rule deletes them after a set number of days; AWS recommends one to keep storage costs down.
  • Use Intelligent-Tiering when access is unpredictable. It moves each object on its own, with no retrieval fee, for a monitoring fee per object.
  • Watch small objects. The 128 KB minimum and the 40 KB of archive metadata can make a cheaper class cost more. AWS suggests combining many small objects into fewer large ones before archiving them.
  • Turn on S3 Bucket Keys for SSE-KMS. AWS says they can reduce AWS KMS request costs by up to 99 percent.

Frequently asked questions

How much does S3 storage cost per GB?

In US East (N. Virginia), S3 Standard costs $0.023 per GB-month for the first 50 TB, $0.022 for the next 450 TB and $0.021 over 500 TB. Standard-IA costs $0.0125, One Zone-IA $0.01, Glacier Instant Retrieval $0.004, Glacier Flexible Retrieval $0.0036 and Glacier Deep Archive $0.00099 per GB-month. Prices differ by region; the tables above list five.

How much does it cost to store 1 TB in S3 per month?

For storage alone in US East (N. Virginia): S3 Standard $23.55, S3 Standard-IA $12.80, S3 One Zone-IA $10.24, S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval $4.10, S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval $3.69, S3 Glacier Deep Archive $1.01. Requests and retrieval come on top, and the two Glacier archive classes add 40 KB of metadata per object.

Is S3 Standard-IA cheaper than S3 Standard?

For storage, yes: $0.0125 against $0.023 per GB-month in US East (N. Virginia). Reading data back costs $0.01 per GB, requests cost more ($0.01 against $0.005 per 1,000 PUT requests), and each object is billed for at least 30 days and at least 128 KB. On storage and retrieval alone, Standard-IA costs less as long as the data you read back each month is under about 105% of what you store. Small objects and data deleted within 30 days change the answer, so enter your object count above.

How are S3 requests charged?

Per 1,000 requests, at two rates for each storage class: one for PUT, COPY, POST and LIST requests, and one for GET, SELECT and all other requests. In S3 Standard in US East (N. Virginia) they cost $0.005 and $0.0004 per 1,000. Glacier Instant Retrieval charges $0.02 and $0.01. DELETE and CANCEL requests are free.

Does S3 charge for data transfer?

Data transferred in from the internet is not charged, and neither is data moved between S3 buckets or to other AWS services in the same Region. Data transferred out to the internet is charged, except the first 100 GB a month, which is counted across all AWS services and Regions (except China and GovCloud). This calculator does not include data transfer.

When is S3 Intelligent-Tiering worth it?

When you do not know how often data will be read. It moves objects to cheaper tiers after 30 and 90 days without access, moves them back when they are read, and has no retrieval fee. It charges $0.0025 per 1,000 objects a month for monitoring. In US East (N. Virginia) an object in the Infrequent Access tier saves $0.0105 per GB-month over Frequent Access, which covers the fee once the object is larger than about 250 KB. Objects under 128 KB are not monitored and stay in Frequent Access.

What does this calculator leave out?

Data transfer out, replication, S3 Storage Lens advanced metrics, S3 Batch Operations, AWS KMS requests for SSE-KMS encryption, extra object versions kept by versioning, lifecycle transition requests, minimum storage duration charges for data deleted early, the temporary copy a Glacier restore creates, Expedited and Bulk retrieval, the optional Intelligent-Tiering archive tiers, S3 Express One Zone, free tier credits and tax.
