A list-price comparison, not a recommendation. Processors, network and EBS bandwidth, and local storage differ between types, so run your workload on a candidate before you switch.

An arm64 type needs an AMI and software built for that architecture. Burstable T types are left out, because their sustained CPU is limited.

How EC2 on-demand pricing works

An on-demand instance has an hourly price set by its instance type, its region and its operating system. You pay for the time it runs, with no commitment. A Linux instance is billed per second, with a minimum of 60 seconds each time it starts, so the cost is simply hourly price × instances × running hours.

A month here is 730 hours (365 days × 24 hours ÷ 12), the month AWS's own pricing calculator uses. An instance is billed only while it is running: stopping it stops the instance charge, though its EBS volumes keep billing.

The name tells you most of what you are paying for. In m7i.large, m is the series (general purpose; c is compute optimized, r memory optimized, t burstable), 7 the generation, i an Intel processor (g is AWS Graviton, a AMD), and large the size. A d in the options, as in m7gd, means local instance store volumes, which are included in the hourly price.

The calculator covers 1,175 current-generation instance types from the AWS price list: Linux, shared tenancy, no pre-installed software. It leaves out bare-metal sizes, the high-memory u- types, FPGA and video-transcoding instances, and families AWS lists as previous generation (such as m4, c4 and r4).

What the hourly price does not include:

  • EBS volumes and snapshots. The gp2 to gp3 calculator estimates that side.
  • Data transfer in and out of EC2, which has its own prices.
  • Public IPv4 addresses, including Elastic IPs, billed per hour whether in use or idle.
  • Windows, RHEL, SUSE and Ubuntu Pro, which have their own prices.
  • Extra CPU credits for T instances in unlimited mode (see below).
  • Dedicated Instances and Dedicated Hosts.

T instances (t3, t3a, t4g, t8i) start in unlimited mode. If average CPU over 24 hours stays above the type's baseline, AWS charges a flat extra rate per vCPU-hour on top of the hourly price shown here.

On-demand Linux list prices per instance-hour.

Worked example: 3 × m7i.xlarge for an application tier

3 m7i.xlarge instances (4 vCPU · 16 GiB each, Intel) in US East (N. Virginia), running all month.

Per hour = 3 × $0.2016 = $0.6048
Per month = $0.6048 × 730 h = $441.50
Per year = $441.50 × 12 = $5,298

If the same 3 only run 10 hours a day on 22 weekdays (220 hours), the month costs $133.06.

The comparison line lists m6g.xlarge, m7g.xlarge and m5a.xlarge as cheaper types with at least 4 vCPU · 16 GiB. 3 m6g.xlarge instances (Graviton2, arm64) would cost $337.26 a month, $104.24 less at list price, if the application runs as well on them.

Ways to lower an EC2 bill

  • Right-size. Measure how much CPU and memory the instance uses at its peak, then try the smallest type that covers it. The comparison above lists cheaper types with the same or more vCPU and memory.
  • Try Graviton. AMIs are specific to a processor architecture, so an x86_64 instance moves to Graviton only with an arm64 AMI and an Arm build of your software. Compare the list prices above, then load-test the Arm build before you move production.
  • Stop what is idle. A stopped instance is not billed for instance usage. Development and test machines that stop outside working hours pay for a fraction of the month.
  • Commit for steady workloads. AWS says Savings Plans can lower the bill by up to 72% compared with on-demand, and Spot capacity is available at up to 90% off for interruptible work. The Savings Plans vs Reserved Instances calculator compares the commitment options for one instance.
  • Check the storage. EBS volumes stay billed after an instance stops: AWS charges for the storage you provision until you release it, attached to an instance or not.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an EC2 instance cost per month?

Its hourly price multiplied by the hours it runs. Running all month (730 hours), an m7i.large in US East (N. Virginia) costs $73.58 at $0.1008 an hour, and a t3.micro costs $7.59. These are on-demand Linux list prices for compute only; EBS volumes, data transfer and public IPv4 addresses are billed on top.

Is EC2 billed per second or per hour?

Prices are quoted per hour, but a Linux instance is billed per second while it runs, with a minimum of 60 seconds each time it starts. AWS also bills Windows, RHEL and Ubuntu Pro instances per second. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server instances are billed for a full hour.

Does a stopped EC2 instance cost money?

AWS does not bill instance usage while an instance is stopped. Its EBS volumes are still billed, and so are Elastic IP addresses, which are charged whether or not the instance is running.

Is Graviton cheaper than Intel on EC2?

Compare them at the same size. In US East (N. Virginia) an m7g.large (Graviton3) is $0.0816 an hour against $0.1008 for an m7i.large (Intel) with the same 2 vCPU and 8 GiB, about 19% less. Graviton types are arm64, so your AMI and software must be built for Arm, and a workload can run faster or slower on a different processor. Test yours before you switch.

Are EC2 prices the same in every region?

No. The same type has a different hourly price in each region. An m7i.large is $0.1008 an hour in US East (N. Virginia) and $0.126 in Asia Pacific (Singapore), about 25% more. Not every type is offered in every region either; the calculator lists only the types the price list has for the region you pick.

What does this calculator leave out?

EBS volumes and snapshots, data transfer, public IPv4 and Elastic IP addresses, operating systems other than Linux and their licences, extra CPU credits for T instances in unlimited mode, Dedicated Instances and Dedicated Hosts, families AWS lists as previous generation (such as m4, c4 and r4), and any discount from Savings Plans, Reserved Instances or Spot. It also leaves out bare-metal sizes, the high-memory u- types, and FPGA and video-transcoding instances.

Prices are public list prices in US dollars, before tax, retrieved on 2026-09-19 from the AWS Price List API (AmazonEC2) and the Amazon EC2 On-Demand pricing page. They change; check the source before committing to a number. Your bill also depends on discounts, credits and usage this calculator does not see.
