gp2 → gp3 savings

gp2 vs gp3: EBS savings calculator

gp3 costs 20% less per GB-month than gp2 and includes 3,000 IOPS and 125 MiB/s at any size. Enter your gp2 storage for the storage saving; the table below prices the extra gp3 throughput and IOPS each size needs to keep its gp2 performance.

Provisioned EBS gp2 storage
Sum the size of every gp2 volume in your AWS account. AWS Cost Explorer → Usage type group → "EBS: gp2" gives you the monthly GB-month total.

Anything from 100 GB to several PB — the math scales linearly.

gp2 vs gp3: how the pricing differs

gp2 charges per GB-month and ties performance to size: 3 IOPS per GiB (at least 100, at most 16,000), and between 128 and 250 MiB/s of throughput. Small volumes rely on burst credits to reach 3,000 IOPS.

gp3 charges less per GB-month and includes 3,000 IOPS and 125 MiB/s at any size. Anything above that is provisioned and billed separately, so performance no longer depends on buying storage you do not need.

gp2 volumes between 171 and 333 GiB can burst to 250 MiB/s; they are matched at 250 here. Many volumes use less than their baseline, so check real usage before provisioning.

Worked example: a 5,334 GiB volume

On gp2, 5,334 GiB gets the 16,000 IOPS maximum and 250 MiB/s. To keep both on gp3 you provision 13,000 extra IOPS and 125 MiB/s:

gp2 = 5,334 × $0.10 = $533.40
gp3 = 5,334 × $0.08 + 13,000 × $0.005 + 125 × $0.04 = $496.72
Saving = 6.9%, not 20%

If the volume never needs more than 3,000 IOPS and 125 MiB/s, nothing extra is needed and the full storage saving applies.

Frequently asked questions

Is gp3 cheaper than gp2?

Per GB-month, yes: $0.08 against $0.10 in US East (N. Virginia), and 20% less in every region on this page. The whole volume is not always cheaper. A gp2 volume over 170 GiB can reach 250 MiB/s, and above 1,000 GiB it has more than 3,000 IOPS; keeping that on gp3 costs extra. Matched exactly in US East (N. Virginia), gp3 costs more than gp2 for volumes of 1 to 5 GiB and 171 to 249 GiB.

Is gp3 faster than gp2?

It depends on the size. gp3 includes 3,000 IOPS and 125 MiB/s whatever its size and never relies on burst credits; a gp2 volume gets 3 IOPS per GiB and bursts to 3,000 only while it has credits. Up to 170 GiB, gp2 has 128 MiB/s, so gp3 gives more IOPS and slightly less throughput. Above 170 GiB a gp2 volume can reach 250 MiB/s (as a baseline from 334 GiB), twice what gp3 includes, and above 1,000 GiB its baseline IOPS are higher too.

Does switching from gp2 to gp3 cause downtime?

AWS says no: Elastic Volumes changes the volume type, IOPS and throughput of an attached volume without interrupting the instance.

How much do extra gp3 IOPS and throughput cost?

In US East (N. Virginia), $0.005 per provisioned IOPS-month above 3,000, and $0.04 per MiB/s-month above 125. A gp3 volume can have up to 80,000 IOPS and 2,000 MiB/s.

Which volumes should move first?

Volumes up to 170 GiB, which get more baseline IOPS on gp3 and save close to the full storage difference. Larger volumes save less if you keep all of gp2's throughput and IOPS: 10% at 500 GiB in US East (N. Virginia). Check how much throughput and how many IOPS they actually use in CloudWatch, and provision only that on gp3.

Prices are public list prices in US dollars, before tax, retrieved on 2026-09-19 from the AWS Price List API (AmazonEC2) and the Amazon EBS pricing page. They change; check the source before committing to a number. Your bill also depends on discounts, credits and usage this calculator does not see.
