How Amazon RDS pricing works

An RDS database is billed for the instance it runs on, the storage allocated to it, and backup storage above a free allowance. Internet data transfer is billed on top.

Instance hours. Each instance class has an hourly rate that depends on the engine and the deployment. In US East (N. Virginia), a PostgreSQL db.m7g.large costs $0.168 an hour Single-AZ, about $122.64 for a 730-hour month. Partial hours are billed per second, with a 10-minute minimum after the instance is created, started or changed to another class. A read replica is billed as a standard instance at its class's rate.

Multi-AZ. A Multi-AZ deployment keeps a synchronous standby in a second Availability Zone and is billed at the class's Multi-AZ rate. For db.m7g.large the Multi-AZ rate is $0.337, 2.01 times the Single-AZ rate, and Multi-AZ storage costs $0.23 per GB-month against $0.115. Replication between the primary and the standby is not charged, and neither is replication to a read replica in the same region.

Storage. Billed per GB-month on the storage you allocate, whether or not the database uses it. gp3 includes 3,000 IOPS and 125 MiB/s below 400 GB. From 400 GB, RDS stripes the storage across four volumes, the baseline rises to 12,000 IOPS and 500 MiB/s, and you can provision more, up to 64,000 IOPS and 4,000 MiB/s, paying only for the part above the baseline. gp2 performance comes from size: 3 IOPS per GB, with a minimum of 100. The RDS pricing pages list a charge per I/O request only for magnetic storage and Aurora, and magnetic storage is no longer offered for new instances.

Backups. Backup storage up to your account's total provisioned database storage in the region is free. The excess costs $0.095 per GB-month in US East (N. Virginia). Manual snapshots are kept after an instance is deleted and stay billed until you delete them.

Not in this calculator: Aurora; RDS for Oracle, SQL Server and Db2; the Multi-AZ DB cluster with two readable standbys; io1 and io2 Provisioned IOPS storage; CPU credit charges when the CPU use of a db.t4g or db.t3 instance, averaged over 24 hours, is above its baseline (both run in Unlimited mode); RDS Extended Support; Reserved Instances; data transfer; add-ons with their own prices, such as RDS Proxy; the AWS Free Tier; and instance classes above 8xlarge or from older generations. RDS Extended Support is charged per vCPU per hour for a database that runs a major version past the end of standard support, standby instances included.

Pairs are Single-AZ / Multi-AZ. Backup storage is billed only above the free allowance. Storage and backup prices are the same for MySQL and MariaDB in every region listed.

Worked example: a production PostgreSQL database

One db.r7g.large running PostgreSQL, Multi-AZ, in US East (N. Virginia), with 500 GB of gp3 provisioned at 15,000 IOPS, and 100 GB of backups above the free allowance.

Instance = $0.478 × 730 h = $348.94
Storage = 500 GB × $0.23 = $115.00
Extra IOPS = (15,000 − 12,000) × $0.04 = $120.00
Backup = 100 GB × $0.095 = $9.50
Total = $593.44 a month, $7,121 a year

The same database Single-AZ costs $301.47 a month. Left at the included 12,000 IOPS, the Multi-AZ database costs $473.44.

Ways to lower an RDS bill

  • Right-size the instance. Look at CPUUtilization and FreeableMemory in CloudWatch over a few weeks. Each size down within a family has a lower rate: in US East (N. Virginia) a PostgreSQL db.r7g.xlarge costs $0.478 an hour and db.r7g.large $0.239.
  • Use a Graviton class. A PostgreSQL db.m7g.large costs $0.168 an hour in US East (N. Virginia) against $0.178 for db.m7i.large, which has the same 2 vCPU and 8 GiB, about 6% less. Test your workload on it before switching.
  • Stop development databases when nobody uses them. A stopped instance is not billed for instance hours; storage and backups still are. Running a db.m7g.large 60 hours a week instead of all week cuts its instance cost from about $122.64 to about $43.80 a month. RDS starts a stopped instance again after seven days, so a schedule has to stop it again, and an instance that has a read replica, or is one, cannot be stopped.
  • Size gp3 for data, not for IOPS. gp2 needs 1,000 GB for a baseline of 3,000 IOPS; gp3 has at least 3,000 IOPS at any size. Provision extra gp3 IOPS and throughput only when ReadIOPS and WriteIOPS show you need them, since they are billed on what you provision.
  • Reserve what runs all year. Reserved Instances give a discount for a one- or three-year term. For MySQL, MariaDB and PostgreSQL they are size-flexible within an instance family, and the discount applies to Single-AZ and Multi-AZ alike. This calculator shows on-demand prices only.
  • Stay on supported major versions. RDS Extended Support charges begin the day after a major version reaches the end of standard support and stop when you upgrade.
  • Delete manual snapshots you no longer need. They are kept after the instance is gone and count toward backup storage.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Amazon RDS cost per month?

It depends on the instance class, the deployment and the storage. At on-demand list prices in US East (N. Virginia), a PostgreSQL db.t4g.micro, Single-AZ, with 20 GB of gp3 comes to $13.98 a month. A db.m7g.large, Multi-AZ, with 100 GB of gp3 comes to $269.01. Backups above the free allowance and data transfer are extra.

Is RDS billed per hour or per second?

Instance prices are quoted per hour, but partial hours are billed in one-second increments, with a 10-minute minimum after a billable status change such as creating or starting an instance or changing its class. Storage is billed per GB-month.

Does Multi-AZ double the cost of RDS?

Close to it. In US East (N. Virginia) a PostgreSQL db.m7g.large costs $0.168 an hour Single-AZ and $0.337 Multi-AZ, 2.01 times as much, and gp3 storage costs $0.115 against $0.23 per GB-month. Backup storage does not change, and replication between the primary and the standby is not charged.

Is RDS backup storage free?

Up to a point. Backup storage up to your account's total provisioned database storage in a region is free, and only the excess is billed, at $0.095 per GB-month in US East (N. Virginia). The allowance is per account and region, not per database. Manual snapshots are kept after an instance is deleted and count as backup storage until you delete them.

Is gp3 cheaper than gp2 on RDS?

In every region listed, Single-AZ gp2 and gp3 cost the same per GB-month. For Multi-AZ, gp3 costs up to $0.001 more per GB-month in Europe (Ireland) and Europe (Frankfurt). The difference is performance. gp3 includes 3,000 IOPS and 125 MiB/s below 400 GB, and 12,000 IOPS and 500 MiB/s from 400 GB. gp2 gets 3 IOPS per GB, with a minimum of 100, so it needs 1,000 GB for a baseline of 3,000 IOPS.

Am I charged for a stopped RDS instance?

Not for instance hours. You still pay for its provisioned storage, including provisioned IOPS, and for backup storage. An instance can stay stopped for at most seven days in a row; after that RDS starts it again.

What does this calculator leave out?

It leaves out Aurora; RDS for Oracle, SQL Server and Db2; the Multi-AZ DB cluster with two readable standbys; io1 and io2 Provisioned IOPS storage; CPU credit charges when the CPU use of a db.t4g or db.t3 instance, averaged over 24 hours, is above its baseline (both run in Unlimited mode); RDS Extended Support; Reserved Instances; data transfer; add-ons with their own prices, such as RDS Proxy; the AWS Free Tier; and instance classes above 8xlarge or from older generations. It prices one instance class at a time; for a mixed fleet, price each class and add the results.

Prices are public list prices in US dollars, before tax, retrieved on 2026-09-19 from the AWS Price List API (AmazonRDS), the Amazon RDS pricing page and the RDS storage documentation. They change; check the source before committing to a number. Your bill also depends on discounts, credits and usage this calculator does not see. Instance prices are on-demand, for a 730-hour month.
